If you went for an interview for a candidate attorney, PLEASE share with us your experience and if the employer ask questions about certain subjects.

Any help in regards to the interview would be helpfull!

PLEASE!!!

Hi Bookworm

I started my articles a few months ago and I can seriously say the law society gave me more uphill then the employer in registering my articles.

In the interview depending on the type of firm your being interviewed for, mine is a specialist family law firm so I was merely asked a few questions about family law, divorce law and asked a few more questions about my experience and personality. They dont ask much about the modules you have done in context because most of them dont even remember the context of modules from back in the day so dont stress about that.

My advice however, be prepared to work all nighters, get minimum sleep, be running to court like a headless chicken, other then that show your professionlism and willingness to learn and most of all your perfectionism and you should be fine.

Good luck and let me know how it goes.

Thanks Shazie, Can you remember what the questions was in regards to family law, divorce law?

The problems that you had with the law society was in regard to what, so that we can see to it that I don't have the same problems?

How many subjects do you still need to do before finishing your LLB?

Hi Bookworm

Be sure to know the ins and outs of an attorney trust account. It is quite an important matter and was the only questions asked of me in my interview. Apart from that, just read through the Attorneys Act and the Rules of the Law Society.

Shazie,

I understand now how it works. We can see, that this few months since you were appointed you learned quite a lot.

Did you pay the fee out of your pocket for right of appearance or did your firm paid for it?

True Tank its not ideal nor lawfully allowed but it happens and happens alot some of the candidates I work with at court are in their final year and dont have right, so it happens alot. Magistrate's almost never ask for your certificate...so it happens

As for paginating lol what a job

Hi all!

Just looking at this thread makes me nervous

I am still a long way from going for interviews (1st year student), but I just wanted to know, for those of you who have experience, do the firms treat older students differently.

Will a person in his/her 30's or 40's going for an interview be treated differently to a person graduating at age 25 under?

Do they expect more from an older student?

Is an older student at a disadvantage? Do larger firms hire people over 30 for articles?

Any comments...?

Hey guys this is interesting

I am also curious to know when exactly must a person apply to be a candidate attorney.

Do you need to have your LLB first?

Quick question .. so it appears you can start your articles before you graduate with your degree? does the time count only after you graduate?

Hey guys.

I order to become a Candidate Attorney it is not necessary to have an LLB.

If you have one, you get your rights of appearance (mag court) as soon as you are registered with the Law Society. This is a 2 year contract.

If you still studying then you sign a 5 year contract and if you finish your LLB before the 5 years expire you have to ask the law society for exemption from the rest of your contract.

That's how I understand it..

Hi

How it works is if you are still studying, you can register your articles with the law society under a 5 year articleship. You wont have right of appearance until you graduate, however you still will go to court albeit for miss matters or with your prinicple.

I dont advise students do this from personal experience its long hours and your studies suffer.

Once you graduate the law society will issue you with your right to appear. Within your article period board exams and PLT are compulsory.

If you go to your the law society website you will note the contract of articleship and see the terms and conditions thereto. If you graduate you still have to complete 2 years practical before you will be allowed to be admitted as an attorney, you will note this principle in the contract.

Hope that clears it up
